Best Places to See the Northern Lights in Finland

Finnish Lapland is widely regarded as one of the premier regions on Earth for experiencing the Northern Lights. 3. Utsjoki – The Northernmost Frontier

Nestled along the Teno River border, Utsjoki is Finland's northernmost municipality. Its extreme northern position placing it directly underneath the auroral oval means you only need very weak geomagnetic activity (Kp 0 or 1) to see lights dancing overhead.

4. Sodankylä – The Heart of Scientific Research

Located in Central Lapland, Sodankylä is home to the famous Geophysical Observatory, which has been studying magnetosphere fields and auroras for over a century. Sodankylä offers dark skies and great view spots with slightly easier accessibility than the extreme north of Finland.

5. Rovaniemi – The Official Home of Santa Claus

Right on the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi is the travel gateway to Lapland. While the city lights create localized light pollution, taking a short drive or walk outside the center (e.g. to the top of Ounasvaara hill or the banks of the river behind Arktikum museum) reveals pristine spots to enjoy the northern lights.
