🌌 Kp Index
The Kp index measures geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 to 9. Higher Kp values indicate that auroras extend further south. In Finnish Lapland, Kp 1–2 is usually sufficient, while Southern Finland generally needs Kp 4 or higher.
☁️ Clouds & Weather
The Northern Lights occur at altitudes of 80–300 km. Clear or partly clear skies are essential. Cloud cover greater than 70% typically prevents observation from the ground.
🌙 Darkness & Moon
During the Arctic summer, 24-hour daylight prevents aurora spotting. The prime aurora season runs from late August to mid-April when the night skies become truly dark.
